CANCER is a word, not a sentence
Dr. Robert Buckman
Welcome to the website associated with the book Cancer Is a Word - Not a Sentence (and its companion volume What You Really Need to Know About Cancer). As you can see, the website is very much “a work in progress”, and we have only just begun to construct it and to build in the features that – we hope – will be practical and really useful to you. When it's finally completed and all the bells and whistles have been added, this website will do four things:

First, it will give you connections (i.e. links) to many of the most important cancer websites on the net. All of the ones that you can reach from here are known and trusted sources. They are websites that have been put together by reputable and well-established cancer institutes, treatment centres or research organizations.

Second, it will answer some of the most commonly asked questions (in other words the FAQ – Frequently Asked Questions). Some of these topics will have been touched on in the books but some will be topics that some of you have been thinking about, which brings me on to the third main function of this website.

Third, this website will give you a chance to ask some questions of your own. Part of it is going to be a sort of “slow-motion chat room” so that you can send in questions (of a general nature – not specific details of your own situation) and then, over the course of a few weeks or a couple of months, I'll collect them into topics that are of common interest or concern. Eventually I'll add them to the FAQ section.

In this way I'll try and address areas of misunderstanding, things that you've heard from other people (or your medical team) and are not sure about or don't fully understand, and common myths and misconceptions. If some of these touch on areas outside my own field of expertise, I'll ask my colleagues at the Princess Margaret Hospital to help me.

In this way, we will gradually produce a resource of information that reflects the issues and concerns that matter most to you – it will be a unique, growing and responsive collection of facts and explanations.

Fourth, it will give you a list of other resources – books, CDs and tapes – that you may find useful. And here you can also post your own email address and anything (tips or contacts) that you have found personally useful and valuable.

So, even though the beginnings of this website look somewhat lean and small-scale at the moment, I hope that you can see how the potential is much wider and useful.

With kind regards
